The jewellery industry is going through good times, and lot of expansions are taking place, thereby creating more and more employment opportunities. Many jewellery organizations are coming out with more outlets and are looking for jewellery designers.
Gone are the days, when there were standard jewellery designs, which every jeweller had. But now, with changing trend everbody wants something unique and different. People do not want to wear the same designs for all occassions. Therefore, jewellers are looking for different designs. If you have not yet decided on what to take up as your career, then simply choose jewellery designing. If you have decided on choosing jewellery designing as your career, here is how you go about it.
How to get started?
In the earlier days, if you wanted to design jewels, you had to work as an apprentice in a branded jewellery store or below an experienced jeweller. But now that is not the case, you can take up diploma in jewellery designing immediately after you complete your schooling. Not necessarily schooling, you can even take up this course after graduation or even if you have completed under-graduation. This course can be taken even if you have completed any other professional course.
To get enrolled in the course all you have to do is, clear an interview and an aptitude test conducted by the institution. You can choose jewellery designing course, irrespective of the background of subjects you have taken during your schooling or graduation.
What is taught in the course?
Everything relating to jewellery designing is taught here. It educates you on the different kinds of stones, gems, different carats of gold, design themes, men’s jewellery, women’s jewellery, costume jewellery, everything that is required to craft you into a good designer.
Opportunities that are available
Once you have successfully completed the course you can start looking for employment opportunities. Many doors will be open for you like export houses, designing houses, fashion houses and the like. You can even choose to become a freelance designer, in case you are employed elsewhere. If you are lucky enough to get into export houses, then within no time your designs will be marketed world wide. But most of the students coming out of jewellery designing institutions, start their own production houses.
Nature of the job
As a jewellery designer, your main job is to sketch the designs, you can do it either by hand or do it using the help of the computer. Computer designs are given more preference than hand sketched ones because, alternations can be easily made on computer designs. You can use paper, terracota or jute to make the designs and give them to the jeweller.
Pay package
Remuneration given for jewellery designing is very attractive. Although, it depends on the jewellery house you are working for. Initially you will get paid about $150 – $200 per month. Slowly as you gain experience you can earn about $500 to $600 every month.
